Marley’s memo still haunts our KPIs.

There are quotes that arrive politely, like a handwritten thank-you note. Some quotes are more aggressive. They kick your office door in and sweep your spreadsheets off the desk. They demand to know why your calendar is booked solid with “Synergy Alignment.” But it is mysteriously missing “Basic Human Decency.”

Marley’s Ghost visiting Scrooge in Victorian London

“Mankind was my business” is one of those quotes.

Jacob Marley comes to us. He is Charles Dickens’ chain-heavy, regret-powered former business partner to Ebenezer Scrooge. Marley returns from the afterlife like an auditor with eternal access and absolutely no patience. In A Christmas Carol, Marley isn’t just a ghost. He’s a cautionary LinkedIn post with teeth. It starts with “I learned this lesson the hard way.” It ends with “I am literally doomed.”

And behind that famous line sits a deeper meaning that’s less seasonal decoration and more philosophical crowbar.

The line isn’t sentimental. It’s an indictment.

Marley declares:

“Mankind was my business.”

He’s not saying, “I volunteered sometimes” or “I was nice when it was convenient.” He’s saying he failed at the central job of being alive.

The word business here is doing mischievous work. Dickens hijacks a term associated with profit, strategy, and respectable seriousness—and then turns it toward the moral. Marley spent his life “in business,” but he mistook the ledger for the world. He optimized for money and missed the point.

The deeper meaning: your life has a bottom line, but it isn’t financial.

Marley’s chains are made of… priorities.

One of the most darkly witty ideas Dickens ever wrote is that Marley forged his chain link by link:

  • cash-boxes
  • keys
  • padlocks
  • ledgers

In other words: Marley is haunted by his own attachments, and they’re painfully ordinary.

That’s the chilling genius. His punishment isn’t fire and brimstone; it’s the weight of a lifetime spent narrowing the human experience into transactions.

The essay hiding inside the story is this: what you repeatedly choose becomes what you carry. Habits solidify. Values calcify. And eventually, your “just being practical” turns into a metaphysical chain you can’t take off.

What chains do you carry? Leave a comment to further explore.
