Hermione Jean Granger was born on September 19, 1979, which means the brightest witch of her age just turned 47. We are a week late with the card. She would have noticed. She would have been polite about it. She would have remembered.
The girl who corrected everyone’s pronunciation on the train to Hogwarts is now officially middle-aged. She has a mortgage. She probably has reading glasses. She definitely has opinions about the reading glasses.
So where is Hermione now? We checked the canon, consulted our crystal ball, and wrote the career update she would absolutely skim for errors.
What Canon Actually Tells Us
Before we get creative, here is the official record, as pieced together from the books’ epilogue, author interviews, and the stage play.
- She started with the underdogs. After the war, Hermione went to work at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, pushing for better treatment of house-elves. S.P.E.W. was never a phase.
- Then she took on the law. She moved to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, working to root out the old, prejudiced laws that favored pure-bloods.
- Then she took over, full stop. By the time of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Hermione is Minister for Magic. The girl Snape once called an insufferable know-it-all now runs the whole government. Revenge is a dish best served with a stack of annotated legislation.
- She married Ron. They have two children, Rose and Hugo. According to the epilogue, Ron’s primary contribution to parenting is confidence.
In other words, canon gave us a woman who spent her entire career doing exactly what 14-year-old Hermione said she would do. Every single person who laughed at her badges owes her an apology.
Hermione at 47: The Unofficial Career Update
The following is pure fan speculation. No Time-Turners were harmed.
Her Professional Profile (If Wizards Had LinkedIn)
Hermione Granger · Minister for Magic · Order of Merlin, First Class
Headline: Reformer. Policy nerd. Still right about the house-elves.
About: Twenty-eight years in public service. Rewrote more outdated magical legislation than any Minister in history. Fluent in Mermish (conversational), Gobbledegook (legal), and passive-aggressive memo.
Skills: Legislative drafting (endorsed by 412 witches and wizards) · Crisis management (endorsed by Harry Potter, repeatedly) · Time management (endorsed by nobody; she knows what she did in third year)
A Day in the Life
- 5:30 a.m. Up before the owls. Reads three newspapers, two Muggle and one magical, and annotates all of them.
- 7:00 a.m. Breakfast with Ron, who has been awake for four minutes and is already asking what’s for lunch.
- 8:00 a.m. Arrives at the Ministry. Every elevator is now staffed by paid, unionized house-elves, who have full benefits and a dental plan. (Nobody is sure what dentistry means for elves, but it was her idea, so it is thorough.)
- 10:00 a.m. Cabinet meeting. Quietly vetoes a proposal to reintroduce the Educational Decrees. Sends the drafter a reading list.
- 1:00 p.m. Lunch at her desk. Somewhere, a sandwich is being ignored while a 900-page report is not.
- 3:00 p.m. Floo call with Hogwarts about library funding. Wins.
- 6:00 p.m. Home. Hugo owls home about his first year of Auror training. Hermione has already color-coded him a study plan. He did not ask for that.
- 10:00 p.m. Bed, with a novel. A Muggle one. She has never fully gotten over how good they are.
Hobbies
Running a Hogwarts alumni book club that meets monthly and has never once finished on time. Correcting the spelling on wizarding street signs. Knitting hats for the elves, even though nobody needs them anymore, just for old times’ sake.
Midlife Crisis
Took up rock climbing, briefly. Found out she was very good at it. Lost interest immediately, because where is the homework?
And Where is Everyone Else?
Hermione would want a complete report, so here are some equally unofficial updates on the rest of the gang.
- Ron Weasley, 46: Co-runs Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes with George. Has perfected exactly one recipe. Still cannot pronounce half the spells his wife invented.
- Harry Potter, 46: Head of the Auror Office. Has aged into the most tired man in Britain. Keeps a framed photo of his desk with nothing on it, as a dream.
- Ginny Potter, 45: Former Holyhead Harpies star, now a Quidditch columnist whose match reports are feared across the league.
- Neville Longbottom, 46: Beloved Herbology professor. The students’ favorite teacher by an absurd margin. Has a greenhouse full of plants that openly adore him.
- Luna Lovegood, 45: Magizoologist. Recently discovered three new species. Nobody else can see two of them, but her papers are very convincing.
- Draco Malfoy, 46: Dealing with his feelings, slowly. Signed up for the Ministry’s mandatory anti-prejudice training. Minister Granger made the curriculum. He has thoughts. He is keeping them to himself.
- Crookshanks: Legend. Timeless. Refuses all questions.
11-year-old Hermione On Her Way
Here is the delightful twist: just as book-Hermione hits her late forties, a brand-new Hermione is about to start her very first term at Hogwarts.
HBO’s Harry Potter series premieres its first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, on Christmas Day 2026, with eight episodes. Arabella Stanton, a former West End Matilda, plays Hermione alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry and Alastair Stout as Ron. The trio was picked from roughly 32,000 young hopefuls. The March teaser already gave fans a glimpse of Stanton grinning at a classroom desk, and yes, the internet noticed.
Which raises the most important question of all: what would 47-year-old Hermione think of watching 11-year-old Hermione? We are guessing she would send HBO a very polite letter with some notes about the S.P.E.W. storyline, which, she would point out, the films left out entirely.
Pre-watch homework (she would insist): Reread Philosopher’s Stone before Christmas. It’s a short book. You have three months. No excuses.
Happy Birthday, Minister
For a whole generation of readers, Hermione was proof that being the smartest person in the room was nothing to apologize for. She raised her hand. She read ahead. She saved everyone, repeatedly, usually with something she had learned in the library. Nearly thirty years after we met her, that still feels like a pretty good career plan.
Happy 47th, Hermione. We know you’ll read this. We know you’ll find the typo.
Tell us in the comments: Where do you think Hermione is at 47? Minister for life, secretly running a bookshop in Diagon Alley, or retired to the countryside with Crookshanks’ great-grandkittens? Best fan theory gets featured in our next post.
